Dan Ryan will be the next executive director of the Portland Schools Foundation, the foundation’s board decided on Thursday.

Director Ryan will resign his seat on the Portland School Board at the end of June, and the remaining board directors will appoint a new director to fill the final year of his term, which expires June 30, 2009.

“We will greatly miss Dan Ryan’s leadership on the School Board,” said Board Director Dilafruz Williams, who has served by his side as Co-Chair for the last year. “But our loss is the Schools Foundation’s gain. We look forward to working closely with him to strengthen our schools and make sure all students and communities have a voice in Portland schools’ future.”

Director Ryan’s last Portland School Board meeting will be June 23. Recently elected Co-Chairs Dilafruz Williams and Trudy Sargent will oversee the School Board’s appointment process.

Members of the Portland School Board represent the entire school district, but are elected from individual zones. The School Board will appoint a new director who:
  • Has lived for at least one year in Portland Public Schools Zone 4, covering the most northern area of the district (For a map click here );
  • Is eligible to vote in the school district; and
  • Is not employed by Portland Public Schools.

The law does not set a required deadline for filling the vacancy; directors Williams and Sargent will report on the timeline and process once the effort is underway.
